Early Xmas Celebration

Americans will put up Christmas decoration after Thanksgiving so I always feel they celebrate Christmas early, but it was enjoyable to see Christmas decorations to feel the holiday atmosphere.

Here I was at Pat's house. They began already since I was late because of my Chinese class. They were waiting for me to start the "secret Santa". We had to prepare a present respectively to your Santa who you were told by an email. Picking up a good present to receiver is always not easy and I felt it was harder for me to get used to their tradition - open the present when they receive it. I mean I am not a picky person to present I receive. I just felt that I like to enjoy the touched feeling afterward by myself and maybe have some water around eyes which I can not do it in front of others. I know I know... Don't refrain your feelings.

Back to the celebration, here is a present I got from my sweet and nice riend, Megan.

So.. what's inside? Let's see more pictures.

So now you know what present I got!!

PS: Leaned the game of looking for the pickle. If you can find a pickle in Christmas tree, you can get an extra present. ^_^

PS2: Also learn the phrase "in a pickle".

Get a text from our supervisior that today we have to swith the time one hour before. I have no ideas why it is. Does that mean I can sleep for one more hour? It is because today is the end of Daylight Saving Time.

I didn't know what "daylight saving time" is, but it sounds a good deal for me that I can have an additional hour to do something. However, it is not. When the daylight saving time starts again, you move your time one hour fast.

Moving your time one hour earlier is to have you sleep early and get out early. It encourages you to be active with the daylight in the day time and to try les electricity at night to save some power. Taiwan used to have this policy too, but it didn't get very response from Taiwanese. One of the main reaons is that people get confused with time easily.

My biological clock may also get confused with time already or it was because I got to bed early last night. I got up early and decided to take some photos outside in the morning after having a great chicken egg omelet. (I have been lazy for too long, and I have to move my butts sometimes.)

 (Breakfast.

Spacing Out 發呆中

It is such a good day today.
So I am spacing out now.
Why now no energy at all?
Will that be for the sake of bad sleep quality, needing more sleep,
Or just not wanting to do the assignment?

Taiwan seems getting farther and farther from me.
Does it mean I like living here?
But I am still watching the white clouds far way,
Hoping I could travel with them to go back.

It is almost three months being here.
It seems I understand myself a bit more.
I may be shocked by some weird thoughts I come out of sometimes.
I also have more time to talk to myself.

What am I thinking of now?
What am I expecting now?
In what way the "I" in the future will grow up?
The blue sky and white cloud over there,
THANK YOU for giving me a few minutes of "space-out"

flash back_first day in USA - arrival

When people here asked me which day I arrived USA, it always reminds me of my interesting arrival.

I was very sad when leaving Taiwan, worried when transferring plane in Osaka, anxious when flying, nervous when landing in JFK airport.

LOTs of people were in JFK! I was so afraid that I will miss something and get stocked somewhere in the airport, and my English seemed not really working here.

So here I am in New York City with two heavy luggage, a big backpack,  and a laptop lingering to find the bus to Columbia University. Even though I have instructions from Columbia University and the information I googled online. I still got lost. I walked like a weird stranger and tried to avoid the weird strangers I think they are.

Finally, I found the bus place. I spoke to a person who seems in charge of arranging bus passengers and told him which bus I want to take. He asked me to wait aside until the bus came. However, I had waited there for a long time and saw a number of buses leaving and coming. There was still no bus for me. I asked the person a couple times again and then at the third time he told me no bus can take me to Columbia University and I can take this which will drop me somewhere closer to my destination and then I can either walk or call a cab. (Sigh) If there was no bus I can take, why you asked me to wait aside.

I got off somewhere I didn't really know and I pulled out my map and being naive that I could walk to Columbia University. Walking about 10 minutes with all the luggage I had and still not sure how long I had to keep walking, I decided to call a cab. Here comes a culture shock for me. I called a cab and got on a cab. The taxi driver seemed reluctant to open the trunk and look indifferent to me. The cab is just like the one I saw from movies that a piece of the plastic between the passenger and the driver. He was driving pretty fast and then suddenly a taxi passing us and cut our line without any signal. My taxi driver was angry and then honked very loud to  the taxi in front of us. He chased the cab and drove very fast to be parallel with the taxi which cut our line. He rolled down the window and shouted " FXXX! Do you know how to drive?" and said some other things I could not really understand. I was STUNNED and thinking if I should remain quite. It was right that I took a taxi because it took about 15 minutes with fast speed. It would probably take me around 40 minutes walking. Here is another cultural experience. You need to tip and they will not give you changes, so I was just persuading myself that I spent some US dollars to the interesting car racing experience.

A nice guy directed me to Columbia University and it seemed I already late for the reception.  I met a person from India while checking in. We went to the dorm together and stared my adventure in NYC and of course USA too.

Rip Van Wrikle

Rip Van Wrinkle

First American Football Game

I was lucky that I was introduced to a Taiwanese family, the Lin's family. Later, there would be a plenty of adventures and experiences that all had to thank the Lin family.

September is also happened to be the American Football Season, so Lin invited me and my roommate to watch our first American football game. It was so fun and I listed some things I learned today.

Tailgate Party

When I was asked if I would like to check out tailgate party, I was very confused and wondering if there is some sort of party held in the back of the gate because of the name tailgate. When I was there for the tailgate party, I soon learned that the tailgate is the back door of the car and people have party with games and some drinks before the football games start.

Part of the Tailgate Party( As shown, this part of the party supports VF team)

Jelly Shots

Jelly Shots (VT V.S.

Corn Hole
This is me playing corn hole, the game they may play at tailgate party. It's simply. You just have to throw the sand bags to the opposite board with a hole on it to score.
(Corn hole

The game is ON!

You may notice that it's the purple team's court since it is mostly purple color around the court. It's East Carolina University's home court (purple color) and Virginia Tech (orange color) is the guest team. I did not know too much about American football but it was a fun experience to see the game and feel the spirit of American football.

Dinner at Megan's house Megan

Megan
