What I like in the USA, top 10 list - part II

FIVE: Loving pets

I had observed that most of the people I had met have a pet or pets at home. I often  see people jogging or walking their dogs. You cannot really see any stray dog or cats like we sometimes see in Taiwan. They will take their dogs for walk  on a daily basis, keep pets  in indoor, get dogs nice dog house outdoor, feed their pets well, take them to the doctor when sick. Besides, I like the fact that they clean their pets excrement when walking them. Most importantly, they treat their pets like family. They will love and take good care of their pets.

FOUR: Obeying the traffic rules

I can't forget how dangerous and tense every time when my roommate and I try to walk across the street to get some food from the McDonald's right by the campus or when we try to get to the restaurant in the walking distance from our place. Although we complain about no sidewalk or zebra crossing for passengers or how fast people driving there, if I think it over, I have to appreciate people in there following the traffic rules, or my roommate and I would probably...(you imagine by yourself). Drivers will let the passengers go first and not really run through the red/yellow light. Besides, American drivers are very "polite" to the school bus. I took bus to school most of the time, and the bus driver would stop the bus only when there is a bus stop sign. I am appreciated some of the nice bus driver will drop my roommate and I closer to our place even though there is not stop sign.

THREE: Diversity

Walking in the campus, it is quite obvious to see the diversity of Americans. In class, my classmates were white, African, or middle Americans, and occasionally I could meet people from Europe. Can you imagine that you were actually able to talking and meeting people from different countries or background without flying to somewhere? It is always interesting to meet diverse people and know some culture from them. I feel like my perceptions and point of views about this world had been widen rapidly and grown rich. While I was very cautious to respect various cultures from friends of diversity, I had tried to share my knowledge of my county and its culture. I am one of few Asian around in school and sometimes I would feel people saw me differently and treat me a bit differently. However, as my supervisor once told me, they may be intimidate to interact with you for the lack of experience or knowledge of you and your culture. As a result, I usually show them my smile in the hope to ease their intimidating as well as mine. I was lucky being in a multi-cultural community with diverse Americans

TWO: Chinese class and students

Interesting enough. I was first worried very much about my Chinese class under the pressure of my students who were school staff, faculty, and instructors. However, I ended up loving my Chinese class and my students. I spent LOTS OF time preparing my first lesson before start, and my roommate wondered many times why I was so anxious and worried about my first Chinese classes. Perhaps I am a perfectionist and wanted my students to have interest in Mandarin and motivation on learning it. Plus, it was the first year for my school to have Chinese course, and certainly I was on a task to do it great so that they will keep Mandarin course for next academic year. I had enjoyed teaching Chinese to my students for 3 reasons. Firstly, I have freedom to design my own schedule and class, so I can decide what to teach or focus. (That actually gave me freedom AND pressure.) I like to add some cultural After all, part of my Fulbright mission
Secondly, my students were motivated. I am not sure if it was because of my teaching methods and lively and serious style or they were really interested in learning. Sometimes, they made some humor or laughter during class.

Last but not least, my students were supportive and cooperative, especially Anzhu, Madan, Xiongming, and Keting. Whenever I saw their performance in class or heard them using some Chinese outside of the classroom, it is always an encouragement for me. Seeing their growth in their Chinese ability, I feel I have to keep working hard in the hope to benefit their growth in Mandarin the most. I was so lucky to have my students in the class.

ONE: Friends

At first, I notice it was a bit hard to make friends here due to my skin color and personality. I tend to be a quite person in front of people if I don't know them. Most of the time when I was around my roommate, people tend to talk to her. I was fine with it though since she is talkative and easy going person. Plus, her English is much better than mine. Even though, I try to make friends with my smile and it works. There were a few times that people said they like my smile and give me a name like princess or angel. (Well, "princess" only for a time, but I am not kidding here!)

I was extremely lucky to be able to meet some nice and caring people and even make friends with them. Besides my roommate (I think we have become a lifelong friend), I had made three friends. I called them secretly "The Three Musketeers" because they three are work related and all take good care of my roommate and I. (Later, I give them different name though. They are liar, gangster, bad guy respectively and me as a thief.) The first couple of months since I was back, I terribly miss them and come to the realization that they may be the only and important reason to go back.

Knowing not all of my friends I met in the States are able to see my post here, I still want to show my most appreciation here. It's never easy for me if I didn't meet you. I have a wonderful year in NC, USA is because of you, my dearest friends.

What I like in the USA, top 10 list - part I

It is going to be one year after I was back to Taiwan. I miss my life in the States often and often wish I could done some things whenever the memory flashes back to me. Therefore, I am planning to write something following up my life in the States for two purposes. First purpose is to keep the record and the other one is to help me reflect what I could done better or what I can share with people whoever might need this kind of information.

I have thought over and over that I want to list my top 10 things that I like the most during my time in the USA. To begin with, the following list is based on my personal experience and I am sure I might miss something or not include something due to the lack of the experience, so please just simply enjoy reading it, not thinking too much. Here we begin.

TEN: Pull pork BBQ

When hearing BBQ, I thought of our style of BBQ and was mouthwatering actually, but it is not the BBQ I imaged. I was told that the BBQ from North Carolina is very different and tasty and I was lucky to try some BBQ when I was there. The first time I had pull pork BBQ is the first time my supervisor took me to meet with the school faculty (Dan, Don and Xudong) at Skylight Inn.I can not tell what is in the source, but it was really good.

NINE: Sports/American football

I like sports and play some sports when I was a student. I have a couple of the opportunities to watch the football games. Most of Americans are really into sports and support their team a lot. Although, I don't know very well about football rules, it was fun watching it and being able to talk about games with friends. (Side note: Going to tailgates are really cool experience seeing people's passion to their supported them and having fun before games.)

EIGHT: Kitchen/house facility

I was impressed the facility in the house. There are AC, heater, dish washer, oven, toaster, and so on to make life easier and convenient.  In Taiwan, we hang our clothes somewhere like balcony or outdoor space to dry clothes. However, every family here has a dryer for clothes. Sometimes I have to worry that what not to put in the dry, but in general it is so convenience to do laundry. I like the food disposer a lot. We normally store the leftover to the trash truck for pigs in Taiwan and it helps me a lot when I cook NOT well. I normally force me to finish up the food I cook, but sometimes it will still a bit leftover I cannot really finish. Besides, microwave is so helpful for people like me who don't cook well. ;)

SEVEN: Fast food restaurants

I don't like fast food but the variety of fast food restaurants here makes me want to try at least one time at different ones, like McDonald's, KFC,  Burger King, Arby's, Taco Bell,Five Guys', Bojangle's, Chick-fil-A. I like the fact of free refilling drink when eating at the fast food restaurant. It is kind of my way to ease my desire for getting different tea at tea shop when in Taiwan by refilling different drinks and taking some home here. There is a Burger King around PCC, so I went there to eat and study at least one time at week, so that may be the reason why  I hadn't eaten any burgers or fries until 3 months after I got back to Taiwan. Even though I have to say some of the burgers and fries are really much better than we have in Taiwan.

SIX: Holidays

I had been lucky enough to celebrate most of American holidays with friends. My favorite holidays are Halloween and Christmas. Knowing holidays is one thing; experiencing them is another. Thanks to friends, I had experienced some very authentic holiday celebration and holiday spirit. I was amazed how they prepare the food for feast. Man and women work together to prepare the food. I felt holiday spirit when having Halloween dinner with a friend's family and decorating a Christmas tree. I was a bit shocked when seeing children "open" their Christmas presents.  I was glad to be able topartly join egg hunting on Easter Day. These holidays are great opportunity to learn the culture and build the friendship. On top of that, I really had a great time and deeply realize the importance of each holiday to the American.

(Flashback) I lost my debit card

While I am helping an ETA to report the lost of his bank ATM card. It reminded me of my time to report the lost of my debit card in the States. FYI, I have ONLY one debit card.

It is so convenient to use credit/debit card in the States and most of the stores take cards. However, the risk for me to use the debit card is I sometimes would use too much money if I didn't keep the record. Unlike the ATM cards, you have to report the lost of your debit card since strangers might pick up your card to use it and it seems happened here quite normally. However, that is the experience I had never had to deal with since I don't really use credit cards in Taiwan.

I still remember clearly the night I lost my card. It was after Chinese class and Dan offered a ride to supermarket as he would usually do on the way back.  When I realized I couldn't find my card at checkout counter, I was a bit nervous since I was pretty sure that I have the ONLY card with me all the time. However, we still looked over the supermarket but failed to find it. On the way home, I pretend clam to tell Dan that I probably left the card home which I didn't think so.

(Well... sometimes I don't really trust myself fully since I am clumsy and forgettable, but this time I know I am right with the card lost no matter how hard I was trying to deny it.)

Anyway, I reported the lost of the card after I had searched everywhere in my room, jacket packets, and bags. I hesitated. I was thinking maybe my supervisor can help me with it or tell me what to do. The only problem I thought of was my phone minutes. My phone is pre-paid plan and I was afraid the call would be cut off  in the middle of the phone call.  However, it didn't occur to me that I would not be able to fully understand what the operator said. Umm.. I didn't understand because of his accent and fast talking speed.

Even though, it worked out. I did it. (Side Note: You don't even need to go to the bank to get a new card They can mail it to you. Sweet! The second frustration I have next with the operator is to report the problem of my Kindle. Not only not to understand his questions but hardly to know how to describe my kindle problem well.)

Roommate's Birthday Week

Thanks to my roommate. I had a lot of cake this week. Different from the cake in Taiwan, people here make their own cake. Although I was desperately wanting to make one for the roommate,  I bought a cake at Food Lion with the help of my supervisor. Well, firstly I don't have confidence in making cake and then I have to buy lots of ingredients which I don't have time and transportation to do shopping.)

I chose the flavor of the strawberry to wish my roommate a sweet year. (Also, I bought some her favorite "drink" as her birthday gift.)

The next days, the school held a birthday party for September birthday girls and boys. Megan also took us to a football game to celebrate the roommate's birthday by making a  chocolate cake(Btw, it was very yummy). I wish myself to be able to make a delicious cake like hers.

Unknown sadness & My Hobbies?

It was so nice to know that there are some friends caring about you. This morning I posted a statue on Fackbook and later a few friends left some texts on fb to cheer me up. Then I met M on campus. He was checking on me too. I felt he was very sweet at that time.

Actually there was nothing bad happened. I was just cleaning some of the stuff in my room which I was very relunctant to do. While sorting out the gifts I am going to give, writing thank you cards, looking around the closet what to take home, oh man, I became very moody. Yes, I was moody and I could not figure out the reasons. Then, I realized it was the sadness for leaving here this morning.

Anyway, I would like to share about today's speech class. The speech I made today did a great job to make me happy. This time we had to make a speech about hobbies that are not yours but your assigned partner's. In short, your partner's hobbies are now your hobbies. We were asked to write our own speech about hobbies as an assignment to hand in class, so we did not that the speech would be switched. Therefore, I try to be funny on my hobbies which were singing, scootering and man hunting. (If you know me, you will know I have no guts to do man hunting.) My partner is a man and I could not image his only hobby is to make people laugh. What an interesting person. In fact, when I first read his speech, I could not help laughing.

I am not sure why but the instructor only asked my partner and me what are the hobbies we have now in front of the class. Because of that, the whole class knew our interesting hobbies and kind of looked forward to hear our speeches. I felt pressure.

Here are some lines of his speech draft.
I don't play video games, and I freaking hate playing golf... Since I was little I have been perfecting this hobby of mine...When the whole class is langhing at my shenanigans is when I feel the most alive. I crave the laughter. I would die for the attention.

Most importantly, I learned the "knock knock joke" because he use one in his closing. (I mean I heard it before but never really figured out what it was.) Knock knock. Who's there? Little old lady. Little old lady who? Wow, I didn't realize that you all were such good yodelers.

Meanwhile, he also did a great job to turn my hobbies into his. I did not talk about man hunting in my speech draft because I felt it might be improper to talk about it before the audience. I wish I had his revised speech draft so that I could show you because it was sooo hilarious. I kind of remember one part. " I like to sing Karaoke with men at night and have breakfast after singing. I would hop on a man's scooter and head to breakfast store and then see the sunrise...Gosh, I wish I could have the creativity he has. The whole class laughed.  I think he is a really laughter-maker, isn't he?

The lesson from Lindt Truffle Chocolate

I felt like I was so silly that I just found out one thing today. I have some chocolate every month during some period of time. I have noticed the wrappings of the chocolate are different which are red, yellow, and blue. Besides, I have noticed the chocolate are different in these three different wrappings. Even though I had never thought of it carefully that what exactly is the difference between these three chocolates. Now I know it clearly when I had these three ones together today.

The red wrapping one - black chocolate
The gold one - white chocolate
The blue one- white chocolate with cocoa nibs (my favorite)

P.S: The Lidnt Truffie Chocolate I had were in a cherry blossom cup. Both the cup and chocolate are gifts from Parker's family when I visited them after my first week in the USA. They were meaningful presents for me because it was my first warmth I received and felt since I arrived this country.

The thought I have from today is: although we don't like to be compared with someone or some people, it is quite easy and obvious to know the difference, strength, weakness of each person if you are put to compared with other people. It is like a job interview. The interviewers can tell who may be the better candidate for the job position if they interview interviewees in a row. However, if you just see every interviewee individually without comparison, he or she has different personal traits and strength. It may be a little tough to tell who may be more suitable for the position.

Easter egg hunt

Unlike yesterday, it was such a great weather in the morning. It was shinny but I still felt cold because of the wind. Even though I like the weather like this, warm but not too cool. It was a perfect day for egg hunting.

The kids looked very excited and the eggs they prepared were more than I had expected. Actually, I wanted to be one of them to be able to pick up the eggs, but I guess I was too big for it and it was better not to fight with the kids for the eggs. ^_^ Even though, watching them picking up the eggs was still fun.

I had thought Easter Day of a religious holiday, but it was a day for kids to have fun and time for family to be together to have fun as well.

See~ many eggs.)

See~many people!)

(Kids enjoyed it and I enjoyed watching them having fun.

Of course I need to take a pic with a Easter bunny.

This is supposed to be slurpee, right?

Then, more thing I have learned from the Easter Day is "marshmallow peeps". When I first heard of it, I thought was something people will do on Easter day because of the word "peep". haha.. but it is kind of sweet, not an action la.

( CT) A Lesson Learned from Sudoku

Happened on March 20th
Written on March 27th.

During the whole week, I had done at least two sudokus (beginner and medium). The night before the test, I felt like I can finish the medium one in time and still have time to challenge the difficult one. However, what happened was not what I had expected.

Such a big failure. That deeply and heavily hurt my confidence. The moment when I left the classroom, I was still holding a grudge against myself; then I blamed myself; next I felt sad. What's even worse was that I had only 5 mins to to clam myself down before I met my supervisor.

If you could not get a good result after making all of the efforts, why should we still be working hard? That was my first question for myself. I understand when people told me that if you don't work hard, you never get a good result. Even though, the failure in the reality made me really depressed and kept blaming myself for the thing which I definitely could make it but I did not. Does this situation imply something about me?

Besides, I lost not only my confidence but my memorable rings and hair band. On the same day, I found my ring was gone when I finished the test and my pretty hair band from my sister was gone too after I finished the restroom. The lost of the ring and hair band made the lost of feeling even stronger. Right after the mini Chinese class, I went home. On the way home, I then again kept blaming myself for being not able to do what I could have made it. But why could not I make it? Thinking about this, I didn't sleep well last night. I wanted to sleep to ease myself, but I couldn't. The boxes and numbers of sudoku were hanging around in my mind.

It took about one week for me to recover from depression and to take out my failed sudoku sheet to take a close look. Facing this blue and hateful sudoku sheet twitches my heart. The battle between self-denial and self-value is very likely still happened again and maybe often. However, time is a really good medication to cure the symptom of sadness and misery.  Being a loser sometimes helps me know my limits and things I should work on. So..jiayou and never ever give up yourself.

(After the test, I tried again.)       (The one I have learned the lesson from.)

Relax after Speech

I slept so well that I didn't want to wake up this morning. However, in order to practice my speech which I need to modify again, I snoozed a little and still get up to get ready for my speech.

As I mentioned earlier, I really feel helpless and stressful about the speech this time. Therefore, I spent lots of time collecting information. I first make sure I understand the material I am going to use and then I drafted the speech. (Just in case you don't really know me that well, I would like you to know that I have no ideas or any concepts of stock or business.)

With the encouragement from D and diligently preparation of the materials, I kind of have a feeling that I may make it.

And I really made it today. OH-------- YEAH!!

Frankly speaking, I was very very nervous this time. While making speech, I was not even sure I know what I was talking about. There are a few seconds my brain is blank. Even though, I got the best grade for this speech.

I can't believe that I really made it.

When I was home, I decided to make a big meal, nothing special, but just to cook something different to reward myself. (Instead of saying cooking something different, I would also say put whatever I have to cook.)

BTW, on the way home today, I noticed of the green spouts on the trees. Spring is here. I feel like I am so blessed watching the scene in front of me. (PS. This morning the bus driver said I am a princess and that reminded me of my father.)

(CT) I was the one?

Date: March 15th (Thu)

This time is an activity for self-promoting in 3 mins to tell the class that you are the best candidate for the Ark.

When I knew the content of the activity, I asked the teacher to know what NOT to say to avoid any compliments from classmates or hatred between countries, because I may be the only one who looks like a slightly different from the classmates and some of them know I am not an American.

Of course everyone has different and unique personal traits. However the interesting part for me is someone said she should be the candidate because she is good at throwing parties; someone said he is the youngest in the class and he doesn't want to die at this young; some people said they have great leadership; a few said they have kids at home so they know how to take care of people. To my surprise, the classmates didn't take this activity seriously and it was quite obvious that some of them just come up their words at the last moment. Unlike me, I was so nervous to death that I would say something wrong.  Almost everyone finished in a very very short time. The teacher didn't have the chance to use the stopwatch.

To my another surprise, I was the chosen one. The teacher didn't say my name right and he looked at my direction. I thought it was the boy sitting behind me, or I would definitely have a BIG smile. After the class, the teacher said congratulations to me and I realized that was me. Wow. this is definitely one of the best birthday presents I have had.

The idea of this activity is let us practice how to promote yourself for the future job interviews. How to leave a good impression and have people think you are the one they want is a great goal to think of it all the time.

Revise the Song Need You Now 改寫歌詞"我需要你"

Thinking I will have so many things to do this week, I was so stressed last night.

I have two speeches, two assignments, one presentation, one paper, and some activities to go. I could not sleep well and ended up to sleep in the couch in the living room around 11pm. While I was half sleepy, the song "I need you now" was playing from my laptop. Then, when I woke up around 2 am, I heard this song again. Therefore, to keep myself awake to do some work, I revised the song for fun. Having some entertainment like it, I was sober until 5 am. Then, I dozed off for an hour. Mm.. not sure how to describe this kind of life, but I surely don't want it too often.

Song " Need You Now" by Lady Antebelum
(Black words: original lyrics; green words: revised lyrics)

Picture perfect memories scattered all around the floor
Reachin' for the phone 'cause I can't fight it anymore
And I wonder if I ever cross your mind
For me it happens all the time
Paper, perfect memos scattered all around the floor
Reaching for the food cause I can’t stay up anymore
And I wonder if I ever clear my head
For me it happens all the time

It's a quarter after one, I'm all alone and I need you now
Said I wouldn't call but I lost all control and I need you now
And I don't know how I can do without
I just need you now
It’s a quarter after one, I’m all alone and I need food now.
Said I wouldn’t cook but I lost all control and I need food now
And I don’t know how I can do without
I just need food now.

Another shot of whiskey can't stop looking at the door
Wishing you'd come sweeping in the way you did before
And I wonder if I ever cross your mind
For me it happens all the time
Another shot of whiskey can’t stop gurgling at the night
Wishing you’d come cooking me the food you did before
And I wonder if I ever clear my head
For me it happens all the time.

It's a quarter after one, I'm a little drunk and I need you now
Said I wouldn't call but I lost all control and I need you now
And I don't know how I can do without
I just need you now
It’s a quarter after one, I’m a little hungry and I need food now.
Said I wouldn’t cook but I lost all control and I need food now.
And I don’t know how I can do without
I just need food now.
woah woaaah.

Guess I'd rather hurt than feel nothin' at all
Guess I’d rather dream than feel hungery at all

Happy Birthday?

I have decided to break my discouraged mood due to Friday's bad performance on my speech during the weekend and get ready to study hard from today. Unexpectedly, I got a phone call from my sister. My family only calls me during the weekend except emergency. They won't call me on the week days. I tried to get on skype as fast as possible. Once I got on it, I got "Happy Birthday" from my father, mother and sister. It was my mother who remembered today is my lunar birthday, so she asked my sister to call me. That was really touched.

When you used to some routines, for example to celebrate birthday with your family, you don't feel those routines are so special that you really appreciate them. Only when you don't have your routine or lost it, you will come to realize that actually you are blessed when having it.

Usually I don't actively celebrate my birthday, but not today. I bought some chocolate to treat my students in Chinese class. Certainly, we reviewed "shengri" by the way. I was happy while seeing students eat chocolate and have energy for class. I think it is because I did something different on my birthday: make myself and others happy.

Keep going, Kelly. Jiayou!

Kelly~

(CT) Group Discussion & Frosty Ground

It was white on the ground, not snowing, but frosty. Although it was very cold, I feel very happy and excited without a reason. I think it may be I do not have to go somewhere to see beautiful frosty ground, but here. It was a pity that I did not bring my camera with me.

Today we had a group discussion to decide what to share with rest of the class what you have learned. However, we talked about why the teacher would assign us the presentation. (Sigh and speechless...)
A: I don't know what I have learned.
B: No one will have interests hearing other people's stories.

What surprised me was that when we talked about "relationship", what came to their mind is the relationship between their boy friends, but not to me. Therefore, I don't know if that means I am getting older, or they are young.

Honestly, I have learned a lot from this class for sure.
Plus, I think the purpose to share your story is not the story itself but the lesson or critically thinking you have learned from your experience. Meanwhile, the rest of the class may learn some thoughts by your experience and stimulate them to have some critical thinking. While discussing, I felt like the era of being a young college student was so far away from me.

Course: Critical Thinking

I had postponed this for too long, so I have to write it do. I want to record the moment and procedures of my thinking.

First of all, I switched the class of American music to Critical Thinking which is much more interesting than I expected. I have interests and huge expectations to this class when the teacher first began "The unexamined life is not worth living by Socrates", including the interesting class activities.

The unexamined life is not worth living -Socrates

During the first class, the teacher want the whole class to figure out what happened based on the fact that a person died in the desert with hand holding a match. Although I got it that it may be relevant to his family, it is always right with the saying " Two heads are better than one." I realized that sometimes the answer of No is not always bad. Instead, "No" can help you think of other possibilities. When you get all of the "NO", you get the "YES".

Secondly, this was a team-work activity, so you have to listen what other people said. Sometimes, we live in the world that we give ourselves the answers we want; therefore, we are not willing to listen to other people's thoughts. Nevertheless, what other people think of could be the ones you never think of and their ideas or answers could be a piece of life puzzle you need.

CT_Seven items_七件物品

For the first activity in this class, we were asked to bring 7 items to represent yourself, so I brought
1. a pen with a flashlight on the top
2. post-it with the shape of the bubble talk
3. some chocolate with wrapping paper in different colors
4. a toy spinner with 8 adjectives to describe people (such as kind, crabby, happy, worried..)
5. a sporty water bottle (You can fold it to very small and not space-occupied when no water in it)
6. a rubber band
7. a piece of bubble pad or wrap

Some of the classmates brought clothes, family photos, books, CDs,etc. I could be over thinking because it was a little bit difficult to know about me by the first sight of some items.

Could you guess why I brought these 7 items.

  1. Caring people in need- I hope when some people need help or a light to brighten their ways, I will be somewhere they can reach.
  2. Not a talker and social person- therefore I like to write down my thoughts or put them on mind
  3. You have to open the wrapping and you will know what flavor or color it is. It implies that I am not the person you may see on the surface.
  4. Sometimes I am moody and changeable
  5. Environmental friendly and I don't like something take too much space or heavy.
  6. Flexible
  7. Not very firm and try to avoid conflicts; want to protect something I think precious for me
So, two of the classmates have to describe you based on 7 items you brought and show. (Of course, they will not know who you are and they won't know the answer unless you told them it's you.)

Below is the description I got from my classmates. The first one cracked me up. The second one made me speechless. Enjoy them.

<One>
A Lindt white chocolate truffle, an ink pen, bubble wrap, a game spinner, a water bottle, a rubber band, and an empty cartoon caption bubble. Hummmm, Bond, James Bond. The empty cartoon bubble represents the secrets that you know but can not reveal. The spinner shows that along with skill luck plays an important role in your world. You pop the bubble wrap to sound like gun fire so that your enemies think you have backup and flee in fear. You use the chocolate to seduce secrets from your informants. But, when they won’t talk the pen contains a hypodermic of truth serum, or a blow dart for protection – depends on what Q had in the stock room that week. And to celebrate a job well done, the water bottle contains freeze dried martinis, just add water. Shake, don’t stir.

<Two>
  • early 20s
  • Male
  • Caucasian
  • Store clerk
  • Hiking, cooking
  • only child
  • married
  • bubbly, hard-working, loner
I think basically my classmates thought I was a young male. (Sigh...)

practice driving & get sick

I asked my supervisor for help to show me how to drive and if I was allowed to drive his car which must terrify him.

I was happy that he said yes to both of my requires. I practiced driving in the school part lots and my supervisor was very patient and kind to remind me all the way while driving. Driving here seems easlier than driving in Taiwan but I still have lots of space to get improved. I wish there is a great GPS like my supervisor to give some directions but the reminders to the rookie like me.

On the way back, we saw a car accident, and I definitely don't want that experience and won't have it happened to me. What I want is to drive at least one time to visit some places. Without a car, you can't really go anywhere, and I feel bad to always bother people to give us rides.

After practicing driving, I felt like I was sick and was wondering how could this happened. I had a running nose, sore throat and sneeze. I have to say that Western medicine is really effective that I slept for about 12 hours after taking some pills and my symptoms relieve a lot, but I still felt very sleepy. Being sick is also not the experience I wanted to have. I dislike weakness.

What I have observed: Driving here seems not hard but I need lots of practice before I hit the road.

What I experience: Driving by my supervisor's car around the speed limit 20. Being sick and felt homesick and helpless while I was sick.

School started.

It was wired that the school started on Friday, but it should be good for students to get real ready to school over the weekend.

I hadn't seen the school for a while, almost a month I think. Seeing lots of people walking in the campus I can feel the energy of the school. For this semester, I take the courses of American music and public speaking. After the first day of introducing the class content, I feel like I have chosen very hard courses which need lots of studying for the tests and speech and I have more duties for Mandarin as well such as the mini class and Chinese New Year event.

For American music, it seems we have to listen and read a lot. Even though the teacher said there will be a few assignments and tests, but according to the experience I had last semester. I know "a few" for teachers means "a lot" for students because tests and assignments are the basic reference for teachers to grade and make sure students to study.

No one would not notice the tie the teacher was wearing. It was a big superman on the tie with bright red and blue colors. I heard this teacher is famous because of his special teaching style and I know part of his fame from seeing his superman tie. I will never forget what he said in class that to be a good kisser, you need to practice a lot and to be a good public speaker is the same principal. Then, he used driving as another example, and I could not agree with him that practice makes perfect but the kissing example impressed me.

I am anxious because of the seem-to-be-hard class I take and more duties of teaching. Plus, there will be less than 4.5 months for me before I leave. I feel like I definitely need to manage my time well.

What I have observed: first day of the school, most of the students will look for their classroom and idle in the classroom doing nothing.

What I experienced:
(1) a man praised my smile when I got off the bus.
(2) did some Chinese paper cutting for Chinese New Year event.

Mm... I think it is kind of weird to celebrate the new year with a friend I know not much. However, the idea to show him how to make a hot pot made me forget that. Plus, most of the people were out of the town for the holiday or to celebrate with their family. Anyway, it would be better to celebrate with someone and I know he is a good person.

We went to get some materials for hot pot and then we started to cook. It still amazed me that men in USA help in the kitchen spontaneously. I felt nervous not because a man was in the kitchen but because I was not really good at cooking. I was afraid to leave him a bad impression that Taiwanese women don't know how to cook.

However, it turned out the hot pot we made was really good. (yeh.. I know hot pot is not hard to make.) Having a hot pot in a foreign country made the hot pot more delicious. No kidding!!

Then, we played Xbox with kidnet to burn some calories. He seemed like a patient person. No matter how bad I drove the car in the game, he would tell me how to drive better next time when playing.  About 30 minutes before midnight, watching TV to know what was going on in Time Square, counting down with a champagne were the things I had never done. Nice!!

On the New Year Day, I felt like the mood to have my next adventure somewhere not in this house. Therefore, the idea of visiting Miami crossed my mind and I looked up the ticket and email friends there right way. Wow.. this is kind of thing I did when my friend and I took the trip to Osaka in Japan. I was really excited and glad I made this prompt travel plan. I don't like the part of me to be a overthinker and I sometimes do thing on an impulse. Yeah! Hooray~ Free will!!

Early Xmas Celebration

Americans will put up Christmas decoration after Thanksgiving so I always feel they celebrate Christmas early, but it was enjoyable to see Christmas decorations to feel the holiday atmosphere.

Here I was at Pat's house. They began already since I was late because of my Chinese class. They were waiting for me to start the "secret Santa". We had to prepare a present respectively to your Santa who you were told by an email. Picking up a good present to receiver is always not easy and I felt it was harder for me to get used to their tradition - open the present when they receive it. I mean I am not a picky person to present I receive. I just felt that I like to enjoy the touched feeling afterward by myself and maybe have some water around eyes which I can not do it in front of others. I know I know... Don't refrain your feelings.

Back to the celebration, here is a present I got from my sweet and nice riend, Megan.

So.. what's inside? Let's see more pictures.

So now you know what present I got!!

PS: Leaned the game of looking for the pickle. If you can find a pickle in Christmas tree, you can get an extra present. ^_^

PS2: Also learn the phrase "in a pickle".
